Winter Wallop

Huge blizzard will be making its fall in northeastern U.S. today. There are plenty of blizzard warnings in effect today from New Jersey up to the southern part of Maine with Massachusetts expected to take the brunt of the storm, particularly in Boston where records might be set. The day is supposed to begin with some light snow and high winds which are to pick up in the afternoon to a much heavier snowfall.

Residents are being urged to stay at home if possible by state officials. Many schools have been closing throughout the Northeast or otherwise getting early dismissal. Businesses are being urged to let their employees either leave early from work or to let them work from home.

The National Weather Service is saying that this could be a historic storm… guess we’ll find out in the next 24 hours. This has been a crazy weather year for the Northeast and with places like New York and New Jersey still recovering from hurricane Sandy, this is the last thing that was needed. Hopefully the damages will be minimal.

Josh Jambon – International Workboat Show

In case you missed the press release, Jambon Boats was recently at the International Workboat Show in December. You can check out a few photos of Josh Jambon.

Josh Jambon

The Workboat Show was really fantastic and it’s a wonderful place to meet potential customers as well as the show to go to if you want to see what new services and products are being offered in the boating world. It really is the place to be for consumers who are looking to learn about the latest trends in the maritime industry as well as a place for maritime related companies to swap and share information.

Twitter Hacked

Twitter has stated that it’s detected unusual patterns on its network, indicating that its database might have been compromised, effecting approximately 250,000 users.

Twitter was able to detect one live attack and shut it down while it was in progress, but in all likelihood, the hackers were able to steal usernames/passwords as well as other information.

Due to this hacking incident, Twitter has reset the passwords for those accounts that it believes were impacted and has sent out an email to those users. Even if your account was not part of the hacking incident, Twitter urges people to make sure they use proper password procedures, including having a password that is a combination of lower case and upper case letters, numbers, symbols and is at least 10 characters long. They also suggest that you do not use the same password across all sites that you may use.

Foursquare reveals what it thinks is ‘best of’

As Foursquare continues to changes itself from a social network that’s based on checking-in and into a much more comprehensive local search engine, it has just rolled out its ‘best of’ lists for food, nightlife, activities, and much more in 30 U.S. cities… this list is based off of more than 3 billion check-ins from its users along with tips, likes, dislikes, popularity, and local expertise.

Foursquare is positioning itself to compete with services such as Yelp which could be a good thing for businesses which are fed up with Yelps mafia like tactics. In November, Foursquare launched a ten-point scoring system for local business. It also launched a new version of its website which is open to those who aren’t members and has an easy to use search box. In addition to all of these new launches, Foursquare just recently released apps for both the Android and the iPhone that will allow merchants to more easily manage their social presence on the Foursquare network.

One of the interesting thing about the lists that Foursquare has come up with is that certain cities have unique tastes in food… Those in Boston love seafood, people in Philadelphia love a good hoagie, and those in Portland are into their veggies.

iPhone and iPad sales slow

The time has finally come… Apple just announced that growth is coming to a screeching slow down as iPhone sales have plateaued and the company is without any new, innovative products in the pipeline which has sent Apple shares spiraling downward, losing 10% of its value and wiping out a years worth of gains. Unless this ship rights itself soon, Tim Cook might find himself out a job with Apple.

Apple is going to need to start exploring their options, whether it’s lowering their price point so that they can get their products into emerging markets, coming up with new products, radically innovating their current products or focusing on new geographic locations. The point is, something is going to need to be done if they want to continue with their growth. It’ll be interesting to watch what the next few months will bring for the company… I for one will be keeping my eye out to see what type of opportunities it can bring.

Google Glasses Spotted in New York

Google Glasses

As recently reported by The Gothamist, a few Google developers have been spotted wearing the new Google Glasses. which is a product from Google that is able to display information, in the same fashion as your smartphone, in a hands-free manner. The user is able to search and interact with the Internet using voice commands.  The operating system will be Google’s android system.

  • The glasses have almost the same functionality that your smartphone has, but with the glasses you’ll be able to pull information faster, without any need for typing
  • Scrolling the web can be done by using a scrolling motion with your fingers
  • The interactions that you have with the glasses are noticeable so people will know when you are paying attention to them

While the idea isn’t novel, there’s a lot of noise due to the fact that this model is much slimmer than previous design models for head-mounted displays.  Availability will be first for  Google I/O developers at a price of $1,500, while a consumer version should be ready later on this year. The price for the consumer version is expected to be on par with the price of smartphones.

Manti Te’o’s NFL Stock Plummeting

Manti Te'o Hoax

Interesting article today about Manti Te’o who had been serving as an inspiration to all after having to deal with both his grandmother’s and girlfriend’s death within the same week… turns out though that his girlfriend isn’t dead. She was never in a car accident nor did she have leukemia.

Deadspin, which broke the story, is claming that Kekua (who was supposed to be the girlfriend of Te’o) is actually a persona that has been perpetrated by Roniah Tuiasosopo who is either related or close friends with Te’o, according to a source.

Te’o claims not to be on the hoax and Notre Dame is backing his story, however this is definitely a huge blemish on his career and will surely cause him to drop in the NFL lottery. It’s also a black mark for Notre Dame.

If Te’o wasn’t in on this, he got fooled big time since he claimed that Kekua’s is what served as his inspiration for his phenomenal performance during his senior year. Te’o issued a statement claiming he developed an emotional relationship with a woman he met online and was the victim of “someone’s sick joke and constant lies.”

I mean you want to believe Te’o as he comes across as a sincere and nice guy, but there are just so many questions. For example, on the day Kekua was buried, Te’o decided to play in a game against Michigan instead of going to the funeral for Kekua. He claims that all she wanted were some white roses. Even if that’s the case, you would think for a guy who seemed to really be in love with his girlfriend, that he would have visited some grave or spoken to some family at some point after the supposed death.

Also, it just seems strange that someone can be that socially naive. It’s not like this was some short online romance. Supposedly the two had been ‘together’ for three years… in all that time, Te’o didn’t care to meet this woman at least once?

Te’o is expected to talk with the media tomorrow… the man who was once considered a hero at Notre Dame after completing a spectacular season has had an awful two weeks with his abysmal game against Alabama and now this talk about him being in on an elaborate hoax. Even if his NFL stock doesn’t go down, he’ll have a lot of work to do on improving his reputation.
